Looking at purchasing a 1997 JD 855 2WD with a FEL and 800 hours. Has aux setup for a backhoe on it and AG tires, extended ROPS(for the backhoe), etc. The engine is toast. The rental yard that is selling it said the tractor sucked in a bunch of dirt/dust and it overheated. Everything else is in good working order, so I've been told.
What would you pay for it?
Considering it is from a rental yard, I know those are probably 800 Hard/abusive hours that are on it.

I would not go very high. I purchased a 955 last year with turf and FEL with 300 hrs for 11K. I would be in the 3K range.
I was looking for one for an experiment. Let me know if you do not pick it up. ....

List price of a short block for that 855 through Deere is $2615.00. At this time, There are no exchange programs on that engine, so let's use that figure for now.
$2615 for the short block
500 for headwork and gaskets, and new nozzles
150 for fuel inj pump tune up.
40 for hyd. pump rebiuld
0 labor ( you work cheap!)
$3305 total parts est.
We haven't even talked about fluids yet, and incedentals.
That tractor, since it's 2wd probably would be worth $6500 tops with the FEL.
I'd say Peters suggestion was not far off base. Possibly on the high side.

See how well I read I did not catch it was 2 wheel drive. I was thinking all were 4x like the 955. Yes a little lower than that would be better you do not want to get stuck. 3000+ in parts and untold hours of work will give you a tractor worth maybe 9K retail or 7.5 whole sale. ....
